Letter from Olivier Messiaen
to Henri Tomasi

June 8, 1943

“Dear Friend,

I must thank you one more time for your amazing execution of my piece L’Ascension last night. The nuances and atmosphere were exactly right: you were most admirable. So was the whole orchestra. They played all of my notes with the appropriate precision and a lovely tone, while striking up most frankly. And they played with their hearts, one might say with reverence… This piece was never before played with such perfection. You may read my letter to your musicians and thank them for me.

Bravo once again and thank you. Most sincerely, your friend,

Olivier Messiaen
